Abu Dhabi

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has launched the Sahel Rating System, a pioneering initiative designed to improve accessibility across Abu Dhabi. Developed in collaboration with government and private sector partners, the system aligns with the UAE’s Year of Community, reinforcing DMT’s commitment to inclusivity and enhanced quality of life.

Inspired by the Arabic word for "ease," Sahel ensures Abu Dhabi is welcoming for all, including people of determination, senior citizens, parents with young children, and individuals with temporary or permanent accessibility needs.

His Excellency Dr Saif Sultan Al Nasri, Acting Undersecretary at DMT, said: "The Sahel Rating System is a pivotal part of our efforts to enhance navigability and create a more inclusive emirate. By introducing this system, we are reinforcing our commitment to guarantee that every individual, regardless of their abilities, can engage with the spaces around them with ease."

Following a successful pilot phase, the mandatory system will first apply to new developments before extending to existing buildings and spaces. Assessments will be based on three categories—Community, Public Realm, and Buildings—and rated across four levels: Accessible, Adaptable, Inclusive, and Exemplar.

Sahel will be integrated at every stage—design, construction, and operation—ensuring long-term accessibility for all.
