Abu Dhabi City Municipality is advancing with confidence towards a more sustainable, beautiful, and attractive city through the implementation of a comprehensive project to landscape walkways and corridors across Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland. The initiative reinforces urban comfort, supports a healthy environment for residents and visitors, and enhances the city’s overall aesthetic appeal.
The Municipality continues to implement phases of this flagship project, which aims to expand green cover and improve the urban landscape by planting 5,000 trees during 2026 along walkways and corridors on Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland. This follows the planting of more than 2,000 trees in 2025, contributing to the development of an integrated urban environment.
The project aligns with Abu Dhabi’s vision to enhance quality of life and achieve environmental sustainability through the development of green infrastructure that supports community wellbeing and meets the aspirations of a modern city.
Engineer Majed Abdul Kathiri, Executive Director of the Operations and Maintenance Sector at Abu Dhabi City Municipality, affirmed that the project reflects the Municipality’s commitment to developing sustainable urban infrastructure centred on enhancing quality of life. He noted that expanding green cover is one of the key pillars of building a more resilient and attractive city that meets community expectations and supports Abu Dhabi’s future ambitions.
He added that most walkways and corridors on Abu Dhabi Island have already been landscaped, while the Municipality is continuing its efforts to complete planting in locations requiring additional coverage. Landscaping works have been carried out along approximately 24 linear kilometres of walkways and corridors across streets and public parks.
He explained that the trees planted as part of the project include native species known for their high adaptability to the UAE’s climate, particularly Ghaf trees, alongside carefully selected varieties including cassia, neem, poinciana, pongamia, ficus, and fruit trees. This diverse planting palette will help provide natural shade along walkways and corridors in the future while strengthening overall vegetation cover.
Tangible Achievements and Figures Reflecting the Scale of Efforts
To date, works have covered 21 locations on Abu Dhabi Island, where more than 2,000 diverse trees were planted in 2025. The Municipality is continuing implementation during 2026 through an ambitious plan to plant approximately 1,800 additional trees in new locations on the island and 3,200 trees across various mainland locations, bringing the total to 5,000 shade trees along walkways, cycling tracks, and running paths.
Environmental and Aesthetic Impact Enhancing Community Wellbeing
The project delivers multiple environmental and aesthetic benefits. It represents a sustainable investment that contributes to reducing temperatures, providing natural shade, improving air quality by reducing pollutants, limiting dust and noise, and supporting biodiversity.
From an aesthetic perspective, the project enhances the city’s overall urban character, creates a comfortable environment for residents, and strengthens its appeal to visitors. It also contributes to community wellbeing, reinforces the city’s visual identity, and supports the psychological comfort of walkway and corridor users.
This project reflects Abu Dhabi City Municipality’s continued commitment to developing a sustainable and environmentally friendly city built on integrated green infrastructure, while providing the highest standards of quality of life for residents and visitors.
