As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and maintain a safe built environment, Abu Dhabi City Municipality conducted a field campaign and an awareness workshop concerning safety requirements for building demolition works. The initiative targeted contractors and consultants working in the building and construction sector.
The campaign covered several construction sites across Abu Dhabi Island and aimed to raise awareness of the safety requirements that must be implemented during demolition operations and verify sites’ compliance with the approved requirements. These efforts contribute to safeguarding workers, members of the public and neighbouring buildings, while reducing accidents and potential risks associated with demolition works.
During their visits, field teams emphasised the importance of properly securing worksites to prevent materials and debris from falling onto neighbouring buildings or passers-by; providing firefighting equipment; and training workers in its correct use. They also stressed the need to comply with safety procedures throughout demolition operations in accordance with the approved demolition method and risk assessment.
The campaign also included verifying that technicians and equipment operators had received the necessary training from specialised entities; ensuring that all workers were provided with appropriate personal protective equipment; measuring noise and dust levels; and implementing the necessary preventive measures to limit their effects. The campaign further emphasised site cleanliness, the safe and continuous removal of construction and demolition waste, and the implementation of pest-control measures where required.
Based on the findings of the field visits, the Municipality took the necessary action according to the condition of each site. This included providing awareness and guidance, issuing warnings, or recording violations relating to the applicable building and construction laws and regulations.
In a related initiative, Abu Dhabi City Municipality held an awareness workshop for the same target groups, addressing the key areas and requirements covered by the field campaign. The workshop presented the principal preventive practices and risk-assessment mechanisms, as well as the responsibilities of contractors, consultants and workers, thereby supporting the safe and orderly execution of demolition works.
