Abu Dhabi

As part of its commitment to the safety of workers in the construction sector, the protection of assets and properties, and the enhancement of community security and safety, Abu Dhabi City Municipality has emphasized the importance and necessity of providing all required precautions to prevent fires at construction sites. The municipality also urged the adoption of measures to ensure the highest levels of safety for workers and the community.
This was highlighted during an inspection campaign by the Environment, Health, and Safety Department at several construction sites in Abu Dhabi and its suburbs from September 15 to 19. Additionally, an awareness workshop was organized to promote public awareness of fire safety and prevention requirements, attended by representatives from contracting companies, consultancy offices, and those involved in the construction sector in Abu Dhabi.
During the campaign and workshop, the municipality stressed that compliance with fire prevention requirements in the construction sector is a top priority, driven by a continuous commitment to the safety of all workers in the industry. This, in turn, positively impacts the community's safety and the surrounding environment of these sites.
The municipality explained that the inspection campaign focused on raising awareness and providing guidance on best practices for preventing construction site fires. At the same time, several warnings and violations were issued against companies that failed to comply with fire prevention procedures and requirements by construction and building laws.
The inspection teams emphasized during the campaign and workshop the necessity and obligation to adhere to several requirements that ensure the prevention of fires at construction sites, including:
- Availability of fire alarms and various fire-fighting equipment on site.
- Safe and proper storage of flammable materials.
- Complete prohibition of smoking in non-designated areas.
- Maintaining the cleanliness of the site, both inside and outside.
- Regular maintenance of all equipment and machinery on site.
- Ensuring electrical connections are safe and meet site specifications.
- Prohibition of waste burning at sites.
- Separation and disposal of waste through approved companies.
- Compliance with Civil Defense conditions and standards regarding caravans, offices, and temporary buildings.
The municipality noted that adherence to these preventive standards and procedures can reduce the number of fires at construction sites, thereby protecting lives and properties, promoting sustainability, and preserving vital resources. It called for increased efforts and shared responsibilities to achieve the highest levels of safety and security for everyone in this critical sector.
