Abu Dhabi

In line with global initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and strengthening environmental awareness across the community, Abu Dhabi City Municipality organised the Earth Hour initiative at the Municipality’s main headquarters, Al Bateen Beach, Khalifa City, and Mohammed Bin Zayed City. The initiative aimed to encourage community members to adopt positive environmental practices, switch off unnecessary lighting, and reduce electricity consumption, thereby raising awareness of the importance of conserving resources, protecting the environment, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
As part of the initiative, the lights at the Municipality’s main headquarters were switched off for one hour as a symbolic gesture to encourage employees to adopt responsible practices that support energy conservation, promote sustainability, and raise awareness of climate change issues.
At Al Bateen Beach, visitors were introduced to the concept of Earth Hour, and the Earth Hour slogan was formed on the sand using illuminated candles to deliver a visually engaging and inspiring awareness message, alongside switching off lights for one hour.
Meanwhile, the initiative held in Mohammed Bin Zayed City included awareness sessions and workshops on Earth Hour and the importance of energy conservation. Illuminated bracelets were distributed to participants, and the lights were switched off in alignment with the initiative.
In Khalifa City, the initiative featured a workshop introducing Earth Hour and highlighting the importance of energy conservation and environmental protection. It also included an environmental drawing workshop for children, the distribution of LED candles and illuminated bracelets to children, the distribution of small plant seedlings to the public, an awareness corner on electricity conservation, and switching off lights for one hour.
Abu Dhabi City Municipality stated that organising such initiatives forms part of its ongoing efforts to support and align with international initiatives and occasions, while promoting a culture of sustainability among its employees and the wider community. These efforts align with Abu Dhabi’s vision to build a more sustainable future and enhance quality of life.
The Municipality also emphasised that environmental protection is a shared responsibility requiring the collective efforts of all members of society. It noted that the Earth Hour initiative delivers an important awareness message encouraging everyone to adopt responsible daily behaviours in the use of energy and natural resources and to preserve them for future generations.
